Bio-Light: Zetiq Submits 7 Patent Requests

RAMAT GAN -- Zetiq Technologies Ltd, part of the Bio-Light group, which is developing techniques for identification of specific cell populations, is in the process of submitting seven requests for patents in the area of cancer cell identification. The combined investment in the research which Zetiq has been developing in recent years comes to $5 million.

Zetiq’s technology gives scientists who are not specialists in pathology the ability to identify cancer cells. The technology the company is developing has until now investigated a number of different types of cancer, including cancer in the blood, cervix, prostate, breast and melanoma.

The unique technology allows the identification of individual cancerous cells in a population of healthy cells, as in the case of early tumors growing in the cervix or in the blood at early stages. At the same time, it allows surgeons to check more easily whether, in fact, all cancerous growths have been removed during surgery. It can also be used for drug development.

Zetiq, which is fully owned by Bio-Light, is completing the development of its first product, a kit for the identification of cancer cells to be used in research laboratories. The kit allows researchers to easily locate and identify cancer cells; currently, only expert pathologists can do so. The kit will be ready for immediate marketing, as it does not require the approval of regulatory agencies such as the FDA.
