ObeCure Metabolite Twice As Effective
Bio-Light: Element in OBEcure drug for obesity twice as effective as original compound
Tal Levi, The Marker, April 26
OBEcure, part of the Bio-Light group, which is developing a weight management drug, announced today that one of the ingredients in its drug for the treatment of obesity, suppresses the need for food twice as effectively as the company’s original compound.
In comparative trials that the company has carried out on laboratory animals, there was a clear statistical indication that one of the metabolites (the product that results when the drug disintegrates in the body) suppressed the need for food in rats at a rate twice as high as the original compound.
The company has submitted a patent request for the drug it is developing today and on the use of the metabolite for weight management.
The metabolite, like the original compound, has been proven effective both through injection and oral administration, which will ease the development of the metabolite to a medication.
Ami Eyal, CEO of Bio-Light, said “this discovery represents a real breakthrough for OBEcure, and it will be used as a basis for the development of the next generation of drugs tha the company will develop for the treatment of obesity. The new drug will be marketed in the future as a an ethical drug as a result of the new findings.”
OBEcure is set to begin pre-clinical and clinical trials with the active metabolite and is expected to begin in coming months, Phase II clinical trials in the United States. This, after it announced in March that the company had received FDA permission to apply directly for Phase II trials, allowing it to skip Phase I studies aimed at proving safety, due to its compounds’ solid safety record.
According to the company, obesity is a central focus in the world medical community, as the problem has worsened quickly throughout the world. The world market for anti-obesity medication stands at more than a billion dollars.
Recently OBEcure signed an agreement in principle to raise capital on a valuation of $20 million . The stock value of the company currently stands at $15 million.
Bio-Light controls four subsidiaries: Allergica, Optotech, Zetiq, as well as OBEcure. Bio-Light has been traded on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange since December 2005.
