NIH Will Conduct Clinical Trials on Flagship Product OBE101
Press Release
December 12, 2006
The Bio-Light Group announced today that its company Obecure has signed an agreement with the National Institutes for Health in the United States. Under the framework of the agreement, the NIH will conduct and fund a human trial, with the purpose of pinpointing the influence of mechanism of the company’s flagship drug, OBE101, on appetite and energy-burning levels in obese patients. According to the agreement, Obecure will supply the drug, and retain the full rights to the results of the trial.
The trial, scheduled to take place in 2007, will investigate various doses of OBE101 on appetite levels and energy burned among 80 patients who are clinically obese.
The NIH is the largest research body in the United States, responsible for the government’s strategic development of medicine and health services, both in management and support of experiments and clinical trials. The NIH receives numerous requests to fund drug trials annually, and chooses them based on the need to advance research in areas the American medical establishment has deemed of national importance. The institution funds trials on a select number of companies developing new drugs, which assists them in advancing the complex drug development process and saving significant sums of money.
Dr. Yaffa Beck, CEO of Obecure, said today, “The fact that the NIH has chosen to join forces with Obecure in conducting and funding trials in the field of obesity, points to the importance of this medical problem in the eyes of the American government, and the interest it has in our company’s effort to find a safe effective treatment. We estimate, that with the NIH’s cooperation, we will be able to thoroughly investigate the mechanism of our compound, helping the company in the registration and development of the product, advancing its progress to market.”
Dr. Nir Barak, Obecure’s Chief Scientist noted: “Our drug causes weight loss which could stem from two possible factors: either the reduction of appetite or the increased burning of calories by the body. The planned NIH trial will be assessing the influence of our drug on these two processes. The fact that this trial will be carried out by such a respected research organization testifies to the intense level of interest that OBE101 is generating. This interest stems from the unique and different way in which this drug works when compared with the treatments currently on the market as well as those being developed.
This planned NIH trial will be conducted at the same time as the PHASE II trials that Obecure is conducting over the course of 2007, which are designed to determine the efficacy of its anti-obesity treatment in obese patients, as well as prevent weight gain in patients who are taking anti-psychotic medications
