IOPtima announced today that it has successfully completed pre-clinical trials of its OT134 device, a novel laser-based therapy for the treatment of glaucoma. The second-generation OT134 is based on IOPtima’s smart laser-based technology known as LNPDS (CO2 Laser Non-Penetrating Deep Sclerectomy) that has already been successfully tested on 23 glaucoma patients in clinical trials.
The OT134 upgrades the previous prototype with improved efficacy and ergonomic features.
The company plans to start clinical trials in the next few months at a leading ophthalmology center in Mexico and subsequently at other medical centers around the world. The company also will apply to the FDA to conduct clinical trials in the U.S.
"The pre-clinical results were extremely successful and we expect to emulate these results in the human trials. In order to treat glaucoma, there is a great need to provide a therapy that can improve the invasive therapies currently used which often result in adverse side effects. We believe that IOPtima offers an effective, non-invasive solution to this unmet medical need," said Dr. Joshua Degani, CEO of IOPtima.
